5 Great Apps For Brain Training

The smartphone and tablet devices have become the interface for many functions that we left to either the real world or other devices. Be it watching television, keeping up with the news, communicating with others or keeping yourself entertained by playing games, the world of apps on these devices have it all. It can be argued though that phone games, for instance, aren’t the most effective use of our time, especially the addictive ones.

One way to turn that equation around is to try out the brain training apps available on Google Play. These apps feature short games that are designed to help you assess and improve specific functions that your brain performs. Users have felt that engaging in these little exercises has helped them be more productive and active in their brain functions, or use an aspect that they don’t get to use on a regular basis (like remembering things, thanks to Google). Here is a list of the top 5 apps available for brain training with a short description of what they are about.

1. Lumosity

One of the premier games in brain training exercises is called ‘Lumosity’. Claiming to be used by over 70 million users and with high profile reviews in The Guardian and the Harvard Business Review, it stands in a league of its own. First, the game is designed by neuroscientists to train memory, attention and other aspects of how we work with our brain. Second, it is not a one-size-fits all solution, you can customize your needs by specifying which aspect you want to focus on and the app also works with your performance to recommend strategies and training exercises.

Full access requires you to pay (up to $60) – an investment that is likely to yield high returns if it keeps your focused and your brain active through this platform.

2. Mind Games

This app provides games that focus on various aspects of your cognitive skills. To list a few, you can test/improve your word memory, visual memory, memory span, memory flow, math skills, face memory and anticipation times through the wide range of games available through this app. You can play around with the games available, see how you do or go with a specific aim in mind and target those skills using this app’s content.

This app has been downloaded more than 5 million times. In-app purchases are available for additional levels or to unlock some content, priced at $2.99 per item.

3. Elevate – Brain Training

Another brain training app that provides training games for improving focus, memory, processing, math, precision and comprehension. I guess what helps this app stand out as compared to the first two is that it simplifies the process of working on your brain. Lumosity, especially, can come off as a bit too complex a diagnosis of your brain. Elevate works more quickly with a simpler interface to navigate. The price tag on in-app purchases runs up to $150 per item.

4. NeuroNation – Brain Training

NeuroNation is also playing the simple game. In the app’s description, the developers work with three categories: memory, focus and intelligence. If any/all of that attracts you, give this app a shot to access 23 personalized training games and join over a million other users who have used this app.

5. Math Tricks
